Friends of Norham Castle

'The Most Besieged Castle in England!'

Our stated aims are:

  1. To promote for the benefit of the public the conservation, protection and improvement of the environment by promoting the historical and architectural heritage of Norham Castle at Norham, Northumberland and its surroundings

  2. To advance the education of the public in particular in relation to the history and architecture of Norham Castle by means including publications, lectures, exhibitions and events, whether in cooperation with schools and other educational or cultural organisations or otherwise.

In the last few years we have regularly organised a programme of community events including: dancing, medieval re-enactments, tours of the castle, children’s activities, treasure hunts, birds of prey, and musical entertainment. We have also hosted some very popular bat walks and nature walks in and around the Inner Keep and the village, as well as a programme of lectures on different aspects of heritage and culture.

In 2021 we had a year of celebrations for the 900th anniversary of the Castle, including visits from the Bishop of Durham and the Duke of Northumberland (who is now our patron) and culminating in our huge Party in the Castle.

We are always looking for more members!

By joining you will support our aims just by paying the membership fee; but you can also help in many other ways. We want to find out about any skills expertise and ideas our members might have to offer and involve as many members as possible in our plans.

To join please click on the button below and fill in the membership form.

We also have high ambitions for more events within, and improvements to, the Castle. We are fortunate to have a very good working relationship with English Heritage who have guardianship of the Castle, and who are keen to help where they can. Their website page has lots of useful information about visiting the castle.
